Clare Carlisle: Bertrand Russell – part 2: The philosopher's staunch criticism of religion echoes modern atheists, but he was also profoundly moved by a 'mystic insight'.

Clare Carlisle: Bertrand Russell – part 2: The philosopher's staunch criticism of religion echoes modern atheists, but he was also profoundly moved by a 'mystic insight'. Bertrand Russell did not consider himself an expert on ethics and religion, and it is true that his writing on these subjects lacks the originality and sophistication of his philosophical work on mathematics

Bertrand Arthur William Russell, 3rd Earl Russell, OM FRS (18 May 1872 – 2 February 1970) was a British philosopher, logician, mathematician, historian, writer, essayist, social critic, political activist, and Nobel laureate. At various points in his life, Russell considered himself a liberal, a socialist and a pacifist, although he also confessed that his sceptical nature had led him to feel that he had "never been any of these things, in any profound sense.

Bertrand Russell's Religion and Science is a beautifully concise and surprisingly accurate book for being quite a short book. The scope of his work is very well layed out. Upon reading Michael Ruse's introduction I have to agree that Russell's vast knowledge of philosophy shines halfway through the book, when he delves into the philosophical arguments for various topics. His first portion of the book deals mostly with the history of the relationship between Religion and Science

Bertrand Russell--agnostic, pacifist, great humanitarian, and Nobel Prize laureate--reviews in this volume the conflict between science and traditional religion during the last four centuries, and attempts to estimate the influence of present-day science upon present-day theology.

Quote:

Pros: A well- documented thesis by one of the best thinkers of the twentieth-century.
Cons: The Christian Church and the Papacy are portrayed in their dark periods.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this book by one of the greatest thinkers of our time. His views on religion and science had truths, fair.
