BLOWOUT Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth By Rachel Maddow.

BLOWOUT Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth By Rachel Maddow. For those who have watched Rachel Maddow’s television show, the opening scene of her book will feel familiar in its eye for a compelling anecdote. She tells the 2003 story of a small new business in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood that is about to be inaugurated by a head of state, in fact, one of the most powerful men on the planet. It turns out the business is a gas station.

Like on her TV show, Rachel Maddow presents historical facts as a storyteller and uncloaks trends that but for her might well go by unnoticed. Rachel tells the story of how oil and natural gas have . .orrupted people and politics in the United States and internationally. Each chapter tells a story, often with a great deal of humor, that ends in shock because what she is saying is true. It is a must read for anyone interested in current Affairs. Best book I’ve read all year! An eye-opening revelation into the interplay of power and politics in the energy sector.

Known for her intense inquiries into complex subjects, Maddow brings her laser-like intuitiveness and keen and wily perception to Big Oil, that stalwart of global economics, and the shadowy nexus of commerce and politics. Rachel Maddow is host of the Emmy Award–winning Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC, as well as the author of Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power, a New York Times bestseller.

Fulminating comes easy to Rachel Maddow. What sets her apart from other serial fulminators is that she does it with facts - and sardonic wit. Her new book, Blowout, takes on the fossil fuel industry or, as one person she cites puts it, the excrement of the devil. She states her thesis at the outset: The oil and gas industry is the most consequential, the most lucrative, the most powerful, and the least-well-governed major industry in the history of mankind. At its heart, this book is a tale of two countries, the United States and Russia, and how, as Maddow sees it - individually and together - they have been warped by a rapacious fossil fuel industry.

Big Oil and Gas Versus Democracy—Winner Take All
In 2010, the words “earthquake swarm” entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia—including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove—was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon. Unlikely as it might seem, there is a thread connecting these events, and Rachel Maddow follows it to its crooked source: the unimaginably lucrative and equally corrupting oil and gas industry.
With her trademark black humor, Maddow takes us on a switchback journey around the globe, revealing the greed and incompetence of Big Oil and Gas along the way, and drawing a surprising conclusion about why the Russian government hacked the 2016 U.S. election. She deftly shows how Russia’s rich reserves of crude have, paradoxically, stunted its growth, forcing Putin to maintain his power by spreading Russia’s rot into its rivals, its neighbors, the West’s most important alliances, and the United States. Chevron, BP, and a host of other industry players get their star turn, most notably ExxonMobil and the deceptively well-behaved Rex Tillerson. The oil and gas industry has weakened democracies in developed and developing countries, fouled oceans and rivers, and propped up authoritarian thieves and killers. But being outraged at it is, according to Maddow, “like being indignant when a lion takes down and eats a gazelle. You can’t really blame the lion. It’s in her nature.”
Blowout is a call to contain the lion: to stop subsidizing the wealthiest businesses on earth, to fight for transparency, and to check the influence of the world’s most destructive industry and its enablers. The stakes have never been higher. As Maddow writes, “Democracy either wins this one or disappears.”

WOW! I'm so excited about this book. Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity. I have no money to buy this, but didn't hold out much hope for finding it here. YIPPEE! LaMer you rock! You have to ignore idiotic trolls like apollo60. I respect anyone's right to have a differing opinion, UNTIL THEY SHOW NO RESPECT TO THEIR AUDIENCE (in a public forum such as this). That's when my respect to them ends. What an imbecile; obviously incapable of stating an opinion in a semi-intelligent way!

To those above, who liked this book. rnI read it. Not sure if any of you did.rnRecycled, hysterical, hyperbole from her show, which was disproved time and time again. rnNo hatred here. I don't know her enough to like or dislike her. Her book lacks basic journalistic and fact-checking practices and is merely a rant from her various shows. The book lacks credibility.rn
