German anthropologist Franz Boas, who had emigrated to New York City 10 years earlier, arranged a small exhibit for the festival in which he displayed artifacts from the Kwakiutls, a Northwest Indian tribe. The poor history of Indian and black American life in 19th-century America had long been justified by the claims of anthropology.
