Pesticide Action Network. Reclaiming the future of food and farming.

Pesticide Action Network. Online Action Center. In this book, PAN Asia Pacific's senior scientist Dr. Meriel Watts highlights the key ways in which children's long term health, intelligence and well-being can be harmed by pesticide exposure in utero or at key developmental milestones after birth and through adolescence. She points to studies from around the world and to data collected by PAN Asia Pacific and regional partners in their extensive work with communities suffering from pesticide-induced health harms. Poisoning our Future: Children and Pesticides.

Don’t poison our future! Campaign highlights pesticides’ impact on children. The Children and Pesticides Campaign is an extension of PAN’s ongoing work on phasing out Highly Hazardous Pesticides globally. PENANG, Malaysia – With the world using about 50 times more pesticides today than six decades ago, their harmful impact on the environment and human health has increased alarmingly – and evidence is growing that children are especially vulnerable.

Children must be protected from pesticide drifts. We do not want a repeat of the incidents in Mendocino and Ventura Counties (California, USA), Davao del Norte (Philippines), Nuwara Eliya District (Sri Lanka), and most recently in Po Ampil Primary School in Cambodia, where more than 30 children were poisoned by pesticides during schooling hours alone. Help us create awareness on pesticide-free buffer zones and realize that it can have the power to protect our future generations from toxic pesticides. Hoping for your full support in this fight to protect our children, Saro, Deeppa, Mila, Sathesh, and the PANAP family.

While there are many sources of chemical exposure, our food is a significant one, as most conventionally farmed foods are sprayed with pesticides. The chemical industry would have you believe pesticide residues on food is of no major concern. Others vehemently disagree. To help parents sort out truth from myth, André Leu, former president of International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) and current international director of Regeneration International, wrote "Poisoning Our Children: The Parent's Guide to the Myths of Safe Pesticides.

A pesticide poisoning occurs when chemicals intended to control a pest affect non-target organisms such as humans, wildlife, plant or bees. There are three types of pesticide poisoning. The first of the three is a single and short-term very high level of exposure which can be experienced by individuals who commit suicide, as well as pesticide formulators. The second type of poisoning is long-term high-level exposure, which can occur in pesticide formulators and manufacturers

Pesticides will drastically damage the future health of our children if people don’t act now. CHILDREN’S HEALTH IS AT RISK THROUGH THE FOOD THEY EAT Every year, tens of millions of pounds of carcinogenic, neuro toxic,, and otherwise hazardous pesticides are thrown onto foods that infants and children eat greater quantities than the average adult. These pesticides have been shown to cause reproductive defects in test animals, which cause poorly understood immune system responses, and others may effect the endocrine system

While children survive pesticide poisoning in most instances, their developmental physiology means that the exposure can still do serious, lasting damage. According to the landmark 1993 . National Academy of Sciences study, Pesticides in the Diet of Infants and Children, exposure to neurotoxic compounds at levels believed to be safe for adults could result in permanent loss of brain function if it occurred during the prenatal and early childhood period of brain development.

Poisoning Our Future: Children and Pesticides
This book pieces together just some of the research showing how children are being born pre-polluted, affected by pesticides in the home, in their food, in the rural environment, even in schools — and not forgetting those hundreds of thousands of children born into poverty that are forced to work with pesticides in order for their families to survive.
The book examines evidence that children thus exposed face significant risks of birth defects, childhood cancer, Autism Spectrum Disorders, neurodevelopmental delays, asthma, middle ear infections, and other diseases.
This book examines some of the mounting evidence that child exposures to pesticides may be a factor contributing to the explosion of adult diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, other metabolic diseases, and cardiovascular problems, as well as cancer, neurological diseases and immune disorders.
