LONDON - The shortlist for this year’s Man Booker Prize, one of the world’s most prestigious literary awards, includes for the first time a novel told in verse. The book, The Long Take, by the poet Robin Robertson, mixes verse, prose and photographs to follow the story of a World War II veteran across the United States in the golden era of Hollywood. One of the judges, the feminist critic and writer Jacqueline Rose, described it as a genre-defying novel that offers a wholly unique literary voice and form.

Julian Barnes has been shortlisted for the Costa Book Awards, just weeks after winning the Booker prize. The Sense of Ending, which is a brief 160 pages, is shortlisted in the novel category alongside books by Andrew Miller, John Burnside and Louisa Young. Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy is among five poetry finalists for her latest collection, The Bees. The category winners will be announced on 4 January, while the overall honour is revealed in London on 24 January.
Author Julian Barnes has finally won the Man Booker prize for his short novel, The Sense of an Ending. Although the book was lauded by critics, Barnes's mother complained of a "bombardment" of filth after reading the novel. The 65-year-old previously missed out three times for the prestigious literary award. Barnes's 11th novel explores childhood friendship and the imperfections of memory. The book went on to win the Somerset Maugham Award in 1981 and was eventually adapted into a 1997 film, starring Christian Bale and Emily Watson. In the 1980s he also began to pen crime fiction under the pseudonym Dan Kavanagh.
