I discovered the works of John Steinbeck back in 1981-ish when I was trying to "expand my horizons" as a literate person trying to move on from shoddy works of horror, (which I still love reading) to more thought provoking and meaningful works of fiction. Of course several books by John Steinbeck were on this list of "MUST READS". Reading John for the first time was an awaking to me.

He is used to the way of horses, too; but nothing has prepared him for the special connection he will forge with Gabilan, the hot-tempered pony his father gives him. With Billy Buck, the hired hand, Jody tends and trains his horse, restlessly anticipating the moment he will sit high upon Gabilan's saddle.
