We catch up with the comet-chasing Rosetta spacecraft in the latest issue of All About Space. For the first time in history, a space probe is orbiting around a comet in the hope of uncovering the secrets to life on Earth. As scientists plan to send a lander to its surface, All About Space looks at the mission so far. All Abou. he Biggest Galaxy in Space. It’s now more than 25 years since Voyager 2 became the only spacecraft to visit the planet Neptune.
The European Space Agency's comet interceptor Rosetta is expected to catch up. .The year 2014 promises to be a great one for private spaceflight.
The European Space Agency's comet interceptor Rosetta is expected to catch up to comet imenko just as it sails inside the orbit of Jupiter next year. In November 2014, the probe is scheduled to deploy the Philae lander to the surface of the comet. The lander is expected to beam back unprecedented views from its position on the . -mile in diameter (4 km) comet. In the first week of the year, two commercial companies hope to launch private rockets, and more missions will follow as the year goes on. On Jan.

Rosetta the Comet Chaser. A European spacecraft is about to make history’s first landing on a comet. Rosetta will begin mapping comet 67 nko in August of this year. Carreau, ATG Medialab). The cosmic billiard ball, as the European Space Agency calls Rosetta, took advantage of four gravity assists, three around Earth and one around Mars, to speed up and adjust its course to match the comet’s. On the way, Rosetta flew by two asteroids to test many of its 21 instruments. After a long hibernation as it reached out to nearly Jupiter’s orbit, it will finally reach o this August.
Rosetta was a space probe built by the European Space Agency launched on 2 March 2004. Along with Philae, its lander module, Rosetta performed a detailed study of comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (67P). During its journey to the comet, the spacecraft flew three times by Earth, by Mars, and the asteroids 21 Lutetia and 2867 Šteins. It was launched as the third cornerstone mission of the ESA's Horizon 2000 programme, after SOHO, Cluster and XMM-Newton.

This month's roundup of space-related imagery features the wake-up signal from a hibernating spacecraft, the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy and a nebula powered by a dead, spinning star. It was confirmed last month that the commercial successor to the space shuttle, the Dream Chaser, will be based at the Kennedy Space Center, preparing for its debut launch in late 2016. The craft is expected to start transporting crew and cargo to the International Space Station by 2017.

Farewell, Rosetta comet mission
Farewell, Rosetta comet mission. Posted by Deborah Byrd in Space September 30, 2016. ESA’s great Rosetta comet mission has come to an end. Details from its final hour, here. ESA said it expects scientists to analyze data from Rosetta’s two years in orbit around this comet for years to come. The craft endured 31 months in deep-space hibernation on the most distant leg of its journey, before waking up in January 2014 and finally arriving at the comet in August 2014.
Rosetta’s Plasma Consortium (RPC) has uncovered a mysterious ‘song’ that Comet menko is singing into space. RPC principal investigator Karl-Heinz Glaßmeier, head of Space Physics and Space Sensorics at the Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany, tells us more. RPC consists of five instruments on the Rosetta orbiter that provide a wide variety of complementary information about the plasma environment surrounding Comet 67P/C-G. Reminder: Plasma is the fourth state of matter, an electrically conductive gas that can carry magnetic fields and electrical currents.
